Narrative |
The group was on the first day of a 3 day canoe trip on the Delaware River. The group came to the first rapid on the river, Skinner's Falls. The river level was 1,250 CFS, a low summer level. The first boat down was one of the leaders, Albert X along with a participant. The second canoe came down without incident. The third canoe with Betty and Wilma ran into boulder and flipped about midway down the rapid. Both participants were thrown into the water. Betty in front climbed partway up onto a boulder in the middle of the river. The swamped canoe crashed into that boulder and pinned Betty's right leg.

Assessment/Treatment |
The leaders quickly responded by ferrying out to the victim and transferred her laying down in an empty canoe which was ferried to shore. Once on shore the leg was splinted with two canoe paddles and 911 contacted.

Analysis |
Thie was the first day of the trip and participants had little experience dealing with moving water. Additional training or scouting is recommended as part of protocol for this level of participant experience.
